On 17 July 2025, at NATO Headquarters in Brussels, the NATO Military Committee held a special meeting of the Military Committee in Permanent Session to heartily thank its 24th Deputy Chair (DCMC), Lieutenant General Andrew M. Rohling, on his last day at NATO.

During the special session, the Chair of the NATO Military Committee (CMC), Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, on behalf of the whole Military Committee, expressed the utmost admiration and gratitude for Lieutenant General Rohling pragmatism, leadership, comradery and commitment to NATO, leading to a countless list of outstanding accomplishments.

The DCMC holds various roles within the Alliance, including assisting the CMC and the entire Military Committee in their duties of being the primary source of military advice to the North Atlantic Council and the Nuclear Planning Group, as well as giving direction to the two Strategic Commanders.

In this regard, among other several achievements, CMC highlighted how - in line with DCMC’s role of the co-ordination of Nuclear, Biological and Chemical matters within the International Military Staff, Rohling “helped steer our Alliance with clarity and calm, reinforcing NATO’s deterrence posture and reminding the world that we are a nuclear Alliance, not for provocation, but for protection.”

In the absence of CMC, the DCMC fills the role and executes the tasks and duties of the position. Additionally, the DCMC acts as the Military Advisor to the NATO Deputy Secretary General in their scope as the Chair of the High-Level Task Force, and Co-Chair of the Senior NATO Logisticians Committee.

“We do not farewell just a colleague, today, but a dear friend, who will be greatly missed, in this forum,” added CMC on a personal note, wishing Lieutenant General Rohling the very best for his next endeavour.
