Representatives from NATO’s Defence and Security Cooperation Directorate met with the leadership and personnel of Azerbaijan’s National Defence University and its affiliated military education institutions in Baku, from 29 to 30 May. They took stock of ongoing reform efforts within the framework of NATO’s Defence Education Enhancement Programme.

Major General Arif Hasanov, Deputy Director of the National Defence University and Rector of the Military Research Institute, briefed their NATO counterparts on the progress achieved to date. In response to a request from Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Defence, NATO will continue supporting faculty and curriculum development, English language faculty training and testing in accordance with NATO standards, as well as eLearning capacity building.

NATO and Azerbaijan will prioritise cooperation on academic exchange with other partner countries within the framework of NATO’s Defence Education Enhancement Programme, notably through a multinational academic conference titled "Experiences and Best Practices of DEEP Contribution to Defence and Security Sector Reform," which is planned for 3–4 December 2025, in Baku.

Major General Hasanov expressed his appreciation for NATO’s ongoing support for the further modernisation of Azerbaijan’s Armed Forces education system, notably through professional development and increasing alignment with NATO standards.
