On 15 May 2025, the International Board of Auditors for NATO (IBAN) gathered the Competent National Audit Bodies (CNAB) at NATO Headquarters in Brussels, as it does every year. This strategic meeting brought together representatives from 30 Supreme Audit Institutions (SAI), including those of 28 NATO member countries, illustrating the strong collective commitment to transparency, accountability and independent public auditing in a demanding geopolitical context.

A packed programme, with high-value discussions

The 2025 meeting was an opportunity to address major challenges concerning financial governance, transparency, security and public administration.

There were a number of highlights over the course of the day:

  • the presentation of the IBAN’s Annual Activity Report 2024; this document illustrates IBAN’s continuous efforts to ensure that the use of public resources made available to the Alliance is the subject of rigorous supervision and appropriate reporting;
  • sharing of experience between SAIs from the INTOSAI community, which strengthened the relationships between these public audit bodies from around the world;
  • the extraordinary speech by Olha Pishchanska, Chair of the Accounting Chamber of Ukraine, who highlighted the vital role of audit bodies in wartime;
  • the presentation of the special report on military mobility by Tony Murphy, President of the European Court of Auditors; this report underlines the importance of conducting audits on security and defence matters within the European Union’s purview;
  • methodological sessions on performance audit and financial audit as practised by IBAN, which demonstrated the value of adapting to new operational realities.

A forum for strengthening international cooperation

The participation of a number of heads of SAIs and leading figures from the world of public auditing shows the increasing importance placed on multilateral cooperation in the field of external audit. IBAN plays a central role in this dynamic by facilitating the exchange of good practices and consolidating financial governance within NATO.

In a changing world, the role of audit bodies is more strategically important than ever. The meeting was a demonstration of our shared commitment to efficient, transparent and accountable governance.

The IBAN team wishes to thank all the participants, speakers and partners for their invaluable contribution to the success of this event.
