NATO’s Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs and Security Policy and Special Representative for the Southern Neighbourhood Javier Colomina conducted an official visit to New York on 10-12 February 2025.

During his visit, Mr. Colomina addressed a meeting of the League of Arab States (LAS) on 12 February, an unprecedented step in deepening political dialogue between NATO and the LAS. The meeting, chaired by Kuwait, was held in a positive atmosphere, with strong representation of Permanent Representatives from across the region. Mr. Colomina set out NATO’s enhanced level of ambition with respect to the Southern Neighbourhood, explaining the genesis of NATO’s Southern Neighbourhood Action Plan; his role as Special Representative; and NATO’s strong partnerships across the region and wide range of engagements with relevant actors in the Middle East and Africa.

Additionally, Mr Colomina held bilateral meetings with the Permanent Representative of the State of Kuwait to the United Nations, H.E. Mr. Tareq Albanai and with the Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the United Nations, H.E. Mr. Abdulaziz Alwasil. He also engaged with UN senior officials and took the opportunity of his visit to debrief NATO Allies during a lunch hosted by the Permanent Representative of Sweden to the United Nations.
