NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoană welcomed Ambassador Fu Cong, Head of the Chinese Mission to the EU, to NATO Headquarters in Brussels for the first time on Tuesday (10 January 2023). The Deputy Secretary General and Ambassador Fu discussed priorities for NATO-China engagement, including dialogue on climate change and arms control, disarmament and non-proliferation.

The Deputy Secretary General noted that NATO remains open to constructive engagement with China, including to exchange views of respective policies and to build reciprocal transparency. Addressing Russia’s brutal war against Ukraine, Mr. Geoană called on China to condemn Russia’s illegal actions and irresponsible nuclear sabre-rattling. He raised NATO’s concerns on China’s military activity near Taiwan. He also urged China to engage meaningfully in dialogue, confidence-building, and transparency measures regarding its military modernisation and nuclear capabilities and doctrine.

The Deputy Secretary General met regularly with the former Head of the Chinese Mission to the EU, Ambassador Zhang Ming, to discuss NATO-China relations and international security challenges.
