NATO Deputy Secretary General: working together on new technologies for a more peaceful future

Today’s new technologies are changing the ways wars are waged and won, and we all have a role to play in ensuring our security in a more dangerous and competitive world. This was the message Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoana gave to NATO’s first annual data and AI leaders’ conference in Brussels today (8 November 2022).
NATO works to safely and securely hasten the adoption of emerging and disruptive technologies, like big data and Artificial Intelligence, by putting robust principles of responsible use at the heart of its approach. NATO has also launched two-ground breaking initiatives, the Defence Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic (DIANA) and the one-billion euro NATO Innovation Fund, to support cutting-edge dual-use technologies including big data and AI that can help address pressing security challenges.
NATO’s annual data and AI leaders’ conference brings together senior representatives from Allied nations, industry and across the NATO enterprise to share best practice and develop common solutions.
The conference, co-hosted by Belgium, featured keynote speeches by the Deputy Secretary General, the Supreme Allied Commander Transformation General Philippe Lavigne, and senior data and AI officials from Canada, France, Germany, the UK and US. It also featured a marketplace showcasing the latest NATO and Allied innovations in the field of AI and data.
