Senior NATO officials met with Albanian Defence Minister Niko Peleshi in Tirana on Wednesday (21 September 2022) to assess the recent cyber attack on Albania’s national information infrastructure, and discuss further NATO support. They were joined by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Artemis Malo and representatives from the Deputy Prime Minister’s Office and national cyber security authorities.

“NATO supports our Ally Albania now, in the current challenging context, and we will continue to do so in the future as it strengthens its cyber capabilities to withstand and repel malicious cyber activities,” said Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Emerging Security Challenges James Appathurai.  

This follows the statement by the North Atlantic Council on 8 September condemning the malicious cyber activities, which Albania and other Allies have attributed to the government of Iran. All Allies stand in solidarity with Albania, and NATO and Allied cyber experts are supporting their Albanian counterparts.  

NATO Allies are committed to continue supporting each other to deter, defend against and counter the full spectrum of cyber threats, including by considering possible collective responses. Allies have also called on all states to respect their international commitments to upholding a norms-based approach to cyberspace.
