NATO is supporting national efforts to extinguish the wildfires raging in many countries across the Alliance. The NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) has recently deployed 40 aircraft, including firefighting helicopters and airplanes, to support firefighters in Greece. This comes at the request of the Greek authorities.
Using a range of helicopters and planes allows crews to operate in remote locations without needing to refill water supplies at a permanent base. This reduces the time between drops and maximises the effectiveness of wildfire suppression. Allied militaries are also making available other unique equipment, both on the ground, and in the air, to support civilian emergency services.
