The Conference of National Armaments Directors (CNAD), with representatives from Allied nations, met on 28 and 29 April 2022 for its Spring Plenary at NATO HQ.

The meeting addressed status updates and the complexities associated with major armaments projects. In that context, Armaments Directors discussed the major implications of the war in Ukraine on the armaments domain, including the new requirements for acquisition and cooperation. They shared their plans to replenish stocks and channel increased defence spending into new capabilities, including reducing Allied dependencies on Soviet legacy equipment. They also discussed the impact of innovation and Emerging and Disruptive Technologies on capability delivery. A dedicated session focused on NATO’s digital transformation and its effect on armaments projects today and in the future.

National Armaments Directors recognised the achievements of major armaments programmes, including the handover of the Alliance Ground Surveillance (AGS) Core System to NATO on 1 April 2022, and endorsed the Alliance Future Surveillance and Control Capability Delivery strategy.

The CNAD plays an essential role in delivering the interoperable capabilities needed to deter adversaries and keep Alliance populations safe. The next meeting for the Conference of National Armaments Directors will take place in Autumn of 2022.
