NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg addressed the security situation in Europe and the importance of strong transatlantic relations with the Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris, on the margins of the Munich Security Conference on Friday (18 February 2022).

The Secretary General thanked Vice President Harris for her strong personal commitment to NATO, and the significant US contributions to the Alliance. “The United States continues to demonstrate transatlantic solidarity in words and in deeds, by consulting with all Allies every step of the way, and with more troops, ships and planes in Europe. European Allies are also stepping up,” he said.

The NATO Secretary General and the Vice President discussed the serious crisis caused by Russia’s military build-up in and around Ukraine and NATO’s continued support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Mr Stoltenberg stressed that NATO Allies are united in their efforts to pursue a diplomatic solution, while ensuring that NATO will protect and defend all Allies. He stressed the vital importance of transatlantic unity at this critical time, when “more than ever, Europe and America must stand strong together.”

On Saturday (19 February) Mr Stoltenberg met the Speaker of the US House of Representatives , Senator Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), and the US Congressional Delegation led by Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC).
