On 4-5 January 2022, a group of students and faculty members from the International Relations and Security Studies Graduate Programme of the Sultan Qaboos University of Oman visited NATO Headquarters for a two-day seminar in the framework of NATO’s public diplomacy efforts.

The group met with Javier Colomina, Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs and Security Policy, to discuss NATO’s current priorities in the lead-up to the Madrid Summit in June 2022.

They were also briefed on NATO 2030 and the way ahead for the Alliance; the future Strategic Concept; NATO cooperation with partners in the Middle East and North Africa, including in the Gulf; the Alliance’s approach to counter-terrorism; NATO’s posture towards China; and NATO’s operations and missions, including NATO Mission Iraq. The group also visited the Euro-Atlantic Disaster Response Coordination Centre (EADRCC) at NATO Headquarters.

Oman, a member state of the Gulf Cooperation Council, has a pending invitation to join NATO’s Istanbul Cooperation Initiative (ICI) and participates in ad-hoc activities, notably at the NATO-ICI Regional Centre in Kuwait.
