On 16 November, NATO’s Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoană spoke at a hybrid seminar on strategic communications and countering disinformation organised by the NATO–Istanbul Cooperation Initiative Regional Centre (NIRC) in Kuwait.

NATO Allies and Partner countries share concerns about disinformation and the danger it poses to our societies, the Deputy Secretary General said. Partnerships play an important role in increasing our ability to defend people against disinformation and enhancing national and collective societal resilience, he added.

NATO has a long experience dealing with disinformation from both state and non-state actors and countering disinformation is at the heart of NATO’s 2030 agenda.  NATO’s approach to countering disinformation: a focus on COVID-19 and the “Setting the Record Straight” portal are examples of how NATO counters disinformation.

Mr. Geoană thanked the government of Kuwait for hosting the Centre. Inaugurated in 2017, it is a unique forum for dialogue between NATO and ICI partners (Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates) on issues of shared interest.
