On Wednesday (15 September), speaking at the Emerging Europe Summit and Awards 2021, NATO’s Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoană underlined the essential role that partnerships and integrations into NATO and the EU have played in the modernisation of Emerging Europe societies.

Re-joining the family of the West, is and will be one of the most successful transformations for the better, probably in European history”, he said, praising the valuable contributions that central and eastern European NATO countries are now making to Euro-Atlantic security and NATO’s continued adaptation.

The Deputy Secretary General further stressed that Allies’ unity and commitment to NATO’s mission and values were undiminished: “What we always do is to make sure that, number one, we stay strong and credible in deterrence and defence and also we respond to these new threats”.

Looking to the future, enhancing national and collective resilience will be at the core of NATO’s 2030 agenda, Mr. Geoană said, citing emerging and disruptive technologies, climate change and cyber among priority areas of work. In doing so, partnerships, among Allies as well as between NATO and the EU, will be essential as no government can cope with emerging security challenges alone, Mr. Geoană stressed.

The Emerging Europe Summit and Awards 2021 was held in Brussels under the title “The Future of Emerging Europe – Towards a Resilient and Sustainable Emerging Europe”. Emerging Europe is a news, intelligence and community platform that brings together countries of Central, Eastern, South-Eastern Europe and the South Caucasus.
