NATO officials welcomed Mr. Kyung-Hyup Kim, Chairman of the Intelligence Committee of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea, to NATO Headquarters on Thursday (22 July 2021) for talks on common security challenges and NATO’s partnership with Seoul.

Stian Jenssen, Director of the Private Office of the Secretary General, praised the Republic of Korea’s long-standing political and practical support for Afghanistan. He noted that NATO will continue to support Afghanistan by providing training and financial support for the Afghan security forces, a continued civilian presence in Kabul and funding to ensure the continued functioning of the international airport.

The talks also addressed the situation on the Korean peninsula, China’s rise, as well as opportunities for stronger cooperation between NATO and the Republic of Korea, including in the areas of cyber defence and arms control. 

NATO is committed to working with partners to build and preserve international peace. As part of the NATO 2030 agenda, Allied leaders agreed at the Brussels Summit to strengthen NATO’s global cooperation with like-minded partners, including in the Asia-Pacific, to defend the rules-based international order.
