NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoană gave ambassadors in the North Atlantic Council a jar of NATO-made honey each on Wednesday (16 December 2020), a pre-holiday gift for the end-of-year Council meeting.

Since April, NATO headquarters has been home to three beehives and up to 90,000 bees, with members of staff and their children invited to get involved with the beekeeping and honey making process. In the first year, the bees produced 25 kg of natural honey and staff members will be able to take home samples.

Honey bees play a vital role in the ecosystem, pollinating flowering plants, trees and crops. Areas surrounding the three hives have been adapted by planting a wide variety of plants, flowers and foliage for the bees to pollinate. With each hive covering up to a five-km radius, the bees are also actively contributing to supporting biodiversity in the communities surrounding NATO headquarters.
