On Monday (26 October 2020), NATO’s Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoană engaged with members of the NATO Parliamentary assembly on current and future security challenges for the Alliance.

Discussions included the ongoing pandemic and the importance of Allied and partner solidarity, notably through the establishment of sufficient stockpiles of medical supplies; opportunities and risks deriving from the emergence of new technologies; and the imperative for our militaries and societies to increase their resilience to cyber and hybrid threats, terrorism and climate change. 

This online event contributes to the Secretary General’s NATO 2030 reflection process.  This will collect views across the whole of NATO on how to make the Alliance stronger militarily and politically, and more engaged globally in the next decade. 

Since its creation in 1955, the NATO Parliamentary Assembly has provided an essential link between NATO and the one billion people that it protects. While the Assembly is independent from the Alliance, it facilitates parliamentary awareness and understanding of the key issues affecting the security of the Euro-Atlantic area and supports parliamentary oversight over defence and security.
