NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg addressed the situation in Belarus in a telephone conversation with President Andrzej Duda of Poland on Tuesday (18 August 2020).
The two leaders agreed that Minsk must demonstrate full respect for fundamental rights, including freedom of speech and the right to peaceful protest. They further agreed that the Alliance should remain vigilant and strictly defensive, prepared to deter any aggression against NATO Allies.
The Secretary General stressed that NATO does not pose a threat to Belarus, and has no military buildup in the region. All Allies support a sovereign and independent Belarus.
