Speaking at the online Symi Symposium on the “The World post COVID-19” on Tuesday (28 July 2020), NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoană stressed the importance to remain vigilant, prepared and engaged in the face of traditional and new security challenges.
‘These have made the security environment more complex and NATO more relevant”, he said. “We must not let this health crisis and economic downturn result in a security crisis.”
As part of the NATO 2030 reflection process, Mr. Geoană emphasized the value of global partnerships for the defence of shared democratic values and the need to identify synergies between NATO and the EU towards enhanced resilience.
NATO’s Deputy Secretary General also welcomed Greece’s achievement of NATO’s 2% GDP defence spending goal.
The Symi Symposium is a high-level annual meeting bringing together global leaders, policy makers, intellectuals, international affairs experts to discuss issues of current affairs and strategy. This year, the event takes place under the auspices of the Greek Presidency of the Council of Europe.
