NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg spoke by telephone with Japanese Defence Minister Taro Kono on Tuesday (21 July 2020), addressing the COVID-19 pandemic, regional security issues, and ways to further strengthen cooperation between NATO and Japan.

The Secretary General emphasized that in responding to global challenges, the close partnership between NATO and Japan is more important than ever. He thanked Minister Kono for Japan’s continued close engagement with the Alliance, including on cyber defence issues, and the Women, Peace and Security agenda. The Secretary General said he looked forward to expanding NATO’s relations with Japan, including on science and technology, human security, and in the fight against disinformation. 

Japan is NATO’s longest-standing partner outside Europe, and our cooperation is based on shared values and respect for the rules-based international order. Over the years, NATO and Japan have worked together to stabilize Afghanistan, to counter piracy off the coast of Somalia, and to strengthen partners like Georgia, Ukraine, Moldova, and Jordan.
