Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoana stressed the enduring value of NATO in a speech at the Hudson Institute in Washington, D.C. on Friday (7 February 2020).
In his remarks, Ambassador Geoana underscored that Europe and North America are stronger and safer in facing shared challenges, including Russia’s aggressive actions and the continued threat of international terrorism. He also highlighted how new technologies like Artificial Intelligence, facial recognition, and automation, as well as 5G, are transforming modern societies. In view of these developments, he recalled that NATO Allies make up half the world’s economic and military might, and must work to retain the technological edge.
The Deputy Secretary General further underlined NATO’s continuous adaptation in the face of evolving security challenges, pointing to the Alliance’s work on cyber and space, as well as emerging technologies. He welcomed that Allies are stepping up with more defence spending and fairer burden sharing, including investments in key capabilities, and contributions to NATO missions and operations from Kosovo to Afghanistan and Iraq.
While in Washington, Ambassador Geoana met with Vice President Mike Pence, as well as other senior officials, including Deputy National Security Adviser Matt Pottinger, Deputy Secretary of State Steve Beigun, Undersecretary of Defense for Policy John Rood, Acting Director of National Intelligence Joseph Maguire, World Bank Vice President for the South Asia Region Hartwig Schafer and members of the US Congress.
