At the invitation of the Chairperson of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg addressed the annual meeting of the CDU’s National Executive Board in Hamburg on Friday (17 January 2020). This is part of Mr Stoltenberg’s regular engagement with political leaders from Allied countries. He thanked Germany for its key contributions to NATO. He also stressed that in unpredictable times, it is more important than ever to strengthen the transatlantic bond and multilateral institutions like NATO.

On the margins of the meeting, Mr Stoltenberg also held talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and defence minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer on the current security environment and implementing the decisions taken by NATO leaders at their London meeting in December.
