Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg joined German Permanent Representative Ambassador Hans-Dieter Lucas at the Berlin Wall Memorial at NATO Headquarters on Wednesday (06 November 2019) for a ceremony commemorating the 30th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall.

Mr Stoltenberg recalled that the Berlin Wall was built to divide Europe but that NATO Allies stood united in defence of freedom and democracy. He said: “We are honoured to host these pieces of the Berlin Wall here at the entrance to the NATO Headquarters. They serve as a symbol of hope, and a solemn reminder to all who pass by, to never take freedom and democracy for granted. We must defend them every day and we must continue to stand united.”
