На наземному об’єкті НАТО оборони проти балістичних ракет «Іджис» в Румунії в п’ятницю, 9 серпня 2019 року, завершилась давно запланована модернізація.

Ця модернізація, яка здійснюється на усіх об’єктах системи оборони проти балістичних ракет «Іджис», не передбачає наступальних можливостей для наземної системи протиракетної оборони «Іджис».

Ця модернізація є елементом поетапного адаптивного підходу США до європейської оборони проти балістичних ракет, оголошеного у вересні 2009 року.

Під час модернізації США продовжували виконувати взяті на себе зобов’язання щодо оборони НАТО проти балістичних ракет, розгорнувши на тимчасовій основі в Девеселу у Румунії систему протиракетної оборони території на великих висотах (THAAD).

Розгортання батареї THAAD у Девеселу було тимчасовим на період відключення наземної системи «Іджис Румунія». Нині система THAAD перебазується як планувалось.

Наземна система НАТО «Іджис» залишається зосередженою на потенційних загрозах   з- поза меж євроатлантичного регіону. Це виключно оборонна система.
