Chairman of the NATO Military Committee, Air Chief Marshal Sir Stuart Peach, and the Military Committee welcome the new Director General of the NATO International Military Staff (DGIMS), Lieutenant General Hans-Werner Wiermann.

During his welcome remarks Air Chief Marshal Peach acknowledged General Wiermann’s extensive experience, you are well prepared for this new position, coordinating between the decision-making bodies of the Alliance, the two Strategic Commanders, national military from NATO and Partner countries, and the civilian International Staff. I would like to personally welcome you into your new role and I look forward very much to working closely with you.”

Deputy Secretary General, Rose E. Gottemoeller, when welcoming LTG Wiermann stated: “I’m very happy to welcome Lieutenant General Wiermann as Director General of the International Military Staff. I look forward to working with him, as I did with his predecessor.”

Lieutenant General Wiermann took over the DGIMS position from outgoing Director General, Lieutenant General Jan Broeks on 11 July 2019. He is a three star General in the German Army who was elected by the NATO Chiefs of Defense in September 2018 and will serve a term of three years.

The IMS is the executive body of the NATO Military Committee, which is NATO’s senior military authority. The IMS prepares assessments and studies on NATO military issues identifying areas of strategic and operational interest and most importantly, proposes courses of action. The IMS enables the National Military Representatives to deal with military issues rapidly and effectively ensuring that the Military Committee provides the North Atlantic Council consensus based advice on all military aspects of policy, operations, and transformation within the Alliance.
