How does NATO help make the world safer and contribute to guaranteeing the long-term security of Allied countries? William Alberque, Director of NATO’s Arms Control, Disarmament and WMD Non-Proliferation Centre, explains.
Deterring potential adversaries is one of NATO’s core tasks, but contributing to an endless arms race has always been in no one’s interest. Since the 1960s, NATO has been involved in the drafting of every significant arms control and non-proliferation treaty, and has contributed to a significant reduction of nuclear weapons. By committing to reducing the amount of weapons, NATO helps to make the world a less dangerous place.
