On 29 March 2019, NATO took part in the annual United Nations Peacekeeping Ministerial Conference at the UN Headquarters in New York. The Alliance was represented by Ms. Clare Hutchinson, NATO Secretary General’s Special Representative for Women, Peace and Security.
Ms. Hutchinson underscored NATO’s long-standing support for the UN’s Action for Peacekeeping initiative. She also illustrated current and new strands of NATO-UN cooperation, including on training to counter improvised explosive devices and protect civilians and children in armed conflict, and on military medicine.
Defence and Foreign Affairs Ministers as well as high level officials from over 130 countries and international organizations attended this year’s UN Peacekeeping Defence Ministerial Conference. They reaffirmed their commitment to UN peacekeeping operations and shared views on how to further strengthen them in all of their main aspects. They also pledged to fill key capability gaps and to further integrate gender perspectives in UN peace-keeping missions, including through the deployment of more women peacekeepers.
