On 11 March 2019, the Political Affairs and Security Policy Division of NATO’s International Staff received a delegation of young diplomats from the State of Kuwait.

The visit took place in the framework of long-standing activities by NATO Public Diplomacy under the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative.

Ambassador Alejandro Alvargonzález, Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs and Security Policy provided an overview of the security challenges facing NATO.

Mr. Nicola de Santis, Head of the Middle East and North Africa Section at NATO, briefed the delegation on the different strands of NATO’s cooperation with countries in the Mediterranean Dialogue and in the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative, with a special focus on Kuwait and the ICI Regional Center. The Kuwaiti delegation also received briefings from diplomatic representatives of Romania and the United States. Romania acts as the Contact Point Embassy for Kuwait for 2019.

The programme of activities included also a visit to the Euro-Atlantic Disaster Response Coordination Centre, which is NATO’s principal civil emergency response mechanism in the Euro-Atlantic area.
