NATO Parliamentary Assembly visits NATO

Members of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly (NPA) visited NATO Headquarters in Brussels on Monday (18 February 2019) for an exchange of views with the North Atlantic Council.
This annual joint meeting is part of the regular consultations between NATO and the NPA. The NPA is an inter-parliamentary organisation, bringing together parliamentarians from NATO Allies and associate countries to consider major security and policy issues facing the Alliance.
The meeting focused on the Alliance’s priorities, including strengthening deterrence and defence, stepping up efforts in the fight against terrorism, and continuing to modernise NATO to meet new challenges. It was also an opportunity to address arms control, progress towards fairer burden sharing across the Alliance, and NATO-EU cooperation.
Ahead of the meeting, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg met with the new President of the NPA Madeleine Moon. He underlined that the NPA provides a vital link between the Alliance and parliamentarians, helping to build awareness and understanding of NATO policies.
The Secretary General also met with the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi. He welcomed the strong bi-partisan support for NATO in the United States. Mr. Stoltenberg noted that US leadership remains key as NATO marks its 70th anniversary and prepares for the Leaders’ meeting in December.
At the weekend, the Secretary General met two US Congressional Delegations at the Munich Security Conference. The delegations were led by the Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Senator James M. Inhofe, and Senator Lindsey Graham, Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Committee on Appropriations, Foreign Relations and Budget. The discussions focused on NATO’s continuing adaptation, fairer burden sharing across the Alliance, arms control and peace efforts in Afghanistan.
