Air Chief Marshal Sir Stuart Peach, Chairman of the NATO Military Committee chaired the first Military Committee in Permanent Session (MCPS) on 11 February with a representative from Skopje participating as an observer.
On 6 February 2019, the NATO Nations undertook the signing of the Accession Protocol for the future Republic of North Macedonia. Following the signature of the Protocol, Skopje has ‘Invitee’ status, allowing its representatives to participate as observers in Allied meetings, this includes meetings of the Military Committee Permanent Session (MC/PS).
Opening the first MC/PS with NATO’s latest invitee, Air Chief Marshal Sir Stuart Peach, Chairman of the NATO Military Committee welcomed Colonel Krume Velkov, acting Military Representative for the future Republic of North Macedonia. The Chairman highlighted this historic moment, “the future Republic of North Macedonia is on the road to becoming NATO’s 30th Nation. The accession process now moves to the capitals of the 29 Allies where the Protocol will be ratified according to national procedures. We all look forward to working with you and, pending the ratification process to welcoming our latest Partner Invitee fully to the NATO family”.
On a day-to-day basis, the NATO Military Committee work is carried out by the 29 Allied permanent Military Representatives. They meet one to four times a week in formal and informal sessions to discuss, deliberate and act on matters of military importance, working in the best interests of the Alliance, while at the same time representing national perspectives and positions.
