Visiting Ljubljana on Tuesday (9 October 2018), NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg congratulated Prime Minister Marjan Šarec on taking office and praised Slovenia’s contributions to NATO. Slovenian troops serve in the Alliance’s missions in Afghanistan and Kosovo, as well as in the NATO battlegroup in Latvia.

The Secretary General also welcomed that Slovenian troops will participate in NATO exercise Trident Juncture in Norway. He stressed that the Alliance’s deterrence and defence relies on fairer burden-sharing. “Slovenia is currently spending just about 1% of GDP on defence, so I encourage you to do more to increase, and as you said, this is in our security interest,” said Mr. Stoltenberg.

During his visit, the Secretary General also held talks with the President of Slovenia, Borut Pahor, to discuss NATO’s ongoing adaptation.

Later, Mr. Stoltenberg will address the National Assembly and meet with its President, Dejan Židan.
