On 25 July 2018 the Euro-Atlantic Disaster Response Coordination Centre (EADRCC) received a request for assistance to fight large forest and turf fires in Latvia.

Since 17 July the Talsi district (Valdgale county, Latvia) has been hit by large forest and turf fires. For the last week, the State Fire and Rescue Service, the State Forest Service, the National Armed Forces, volunteers and private entities have been fighting the fire. Currently, national capacities are overstretched. The weather conditions may worsen. Most of the affected areas are not accessible by ground capabilities and aerial firefighting is the only option. The surface of the affected area doubled since 19 July and is currently estimated at around 1200 ha.
