NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg met with Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel on Friday (22 June 2018) at the new NATO Headquarters to prepare for the Summit of Allied leaders next month.

The Secretary General thanked Belgium for its crucial role in constructing NATO’s new building and for hosting the Alliance since 1967. “This is a modern home for a modern Alliance,” he said.

Addressing the NATO Summit, the Secretary General underlined that Allied leaders will take decisions to enhance NATO’s defence and deterrence, step up efforts in the fight against terrorism and strengthen cooperation with the European Union. Leaders will also discuss the importance of burden-sharing.

The Secretary General also praised Belgium’s contributions to the Alliance. Belgian troops are part of NATO’s Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan, serve with NATO’s battlegroup in Lithuania, and contribute to the Alliance’s air policing mission.
