The NATO-Istanbul Cooperation Initiative (ICI) Regional Centre is hosting the first training course on the protection of critical energy infrastructure. More than 30 participants from the region are exploring threats to critical energy infrastructure and resilience measures.

The week-long course features lectures by internationally renowned experts on evolving cyber threats to energy infrastructure, NATO’s and national approaches to resilience, the link between energy and geopolitics, and methodologies for risk analysis and mitigation. It will help the participants to recognise hybrid risks in the energy domain, enhance the resilience of critical energy infrastructures, and understand NATO’s role in this field.

The Kuwaiti authorities, the NATO School in Oberammergau, the US Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, the NATO Energy Security Centre of Excellence in Vilnius, and NATO’s Emerging Security Challenges Division co-organised the course with the support of the NATO Science for Peace and Security (SPS) Programme. It is the second of five SPS-supported, tailor-made training courses for the NATO-ICI Regional Centre with the other efforts focusing on chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear threats, and cyber defence.

Inaugurated on 24 January 2017, the NATO-ICI Regional Centre is the hub for training, education and other cooperation activities between NATO and its ICI partners in the Gulf, including Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
