NATO Deputy Secretary General Rose Gottemoeller visited Rome on Friday (1 December) to participate in this year’s MED-Mediterranean Dialogues, addressing security challenges facing the Middle East and North Africa. Speaking on a panel with officials from Morocco, Turkey, and the UK, she emphasised the importance of cooperation for securing peace in the region.

Talking about how NATO works with partners in the region, Gottemoeller stressed that "we have the tools" and highlighted the renewed effort of the Alliance on their implementation. "Projecting stability means enhancing our cooperation with our partners in the Mediterranean Dialogue and the Gulf, through the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative," she said. "We need to bring together NATO Allies and partners to do everything we can to project security and stability to the region."

During her visit, Ms. Gottemoeller held meetings with Tunisian Foreign Minister Khemaies Jhinaoui, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Hassan Shoukry, the Advisor to the King of Morocco, Youssef Amrani, and the Secretary General of the Italian Foreign Ministry, Ambassador Elisabetta Belloni.

The Deputy Secretary General also met the Secretary General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit. She stressed the value of dialogue between NATO and the League of Arab States and praised the positive steps that have been taken to strengthen this cooperation.
