Lieutenant General Jan Broeks, Director General of the NATO International Military Staff (DGIMS), visited Finland on 22-24 November. During his visit, DGIMS met with General Jarmo Lindberg, Chief of Defence of Finland and other high-level military officials of all services of the Finish Armed Forces, and visited the European Centre of Excellence for Countering Hybrid Threats.

The discussions between General Broeks and General Jarmo Lindberg, Chief of Defence of Finland, focused on NATO-Finnish military cooperation and interoperability. General Broeks commended General Lindberg for "Finland's active partnership with NATO, as evidenced through participation in NATO-led missions and operations, the NATO Response Force, training and exercises, trust funds, cyber defence and other activities that contribute to greater interoperability and security."

During the visit, the Director General also met with the Commander of the Finnish Air Force, Major General Sampo Eskelinen, Commander of the Finnish Army, Major General Petri Hulkko, and the Commander of the Finnish Navy, Vice-Admiral Veijo Taipalus. He received comprehensive briefings and demonstrations showcasing the capabilities of the three branches of the Finnish Armed Forces.

Finnish cooperation with NATO is based on the country's long-standing policy of military non-alignment and firm national political consensus. Cooperation has been reinforced over the years since Finland joined NATO’s Partnership for Peace programme in 1994, most recently in 2014 when Finland became one of NATO's Enhanced Opportunity Partners at the Summit in Wales.

NATO and Finland actively cooperate on peace and security operations and have developed practical cooperation in many other areas, including education and training, and the development of military capabilities.  This cooperation also enables the Finnish Defence Forces to develop further capabilities and increase interoperability with NATO Nations, other partners as well as international organisations active in multinational peacekeeping operations.

As part of his visit, Lieutenant General Broeks visited the European Centre of Excellence for Countering Hybrid Threats which is an initiative of the Finnish government, supported by 11 other nations, as well as NATO and the EU. The Centre will help nations and international organisations like NATO and the EU to better understand modern, complex threats and to strengthen our societies against them.
