NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg joined world leaders at the opening of the 72nd session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday (19 September 2017). This year’s debate emphasizes the needs of the world’s ordinary people. During his four-day visit to the United States, Mr. Stoltenberg will meet with UN Secretary-General António Guterres and other high-level officials.

NATO and the United Nations reinforce one another, as organisations committed to tackling security challenges and upholding the international rules-based order. The two organisations work closely on Afghanistan and Iraq, and NATO has pledged support for UN peace operations. In the future, NATO and the UN could work further on building the defence capacities of countries at risk of instability.

On Monday night, the Secretary General met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. On Wednesday, Mr. Stoltenberg will visit US Central Command (CENTCOM) and Special Operations Command (SOCOM) in Tampa, Florida, to discuss how NATO could step up its role in the fight against terrorism even further. On Thursday, the Secretary General is scheduled to meet with a number of world leaders in New York.
