Defence Ministers meet to discuss NATO’s adaptation

NATO Defence Ministers began two days of talks in Brussels on Wednesday (15 February 2017), focused on ensuring NATO’s strength and flexibility in the face of evolving challenges. Today, Ministers will review progress in deploying NATO’s deterrent forces in the eastern part of the Alliance and assess what more NATO can do in the fight against terrorism.
Ministers are expected to agree on a new regional Hub for the South, based at NATO’s Joint Force Command in Naples. This will help Allies coordinate information on crisis countries and address other challenges in the Middle East and North Africa.
On Thursday (16 February 2017), Ministers will discuss the next steps to modernise NATO’s Command Structure. They will also address how NATO can better counter cyber-attacks, which are becoming more frequent and complex.
Later in the day, Ministers will meet with Georgian Defence Minister Levan Izoria to assess the security situation in Georgia and review the government’s ongoing reforms. NATO remains strongly committed to helping Georgia improve its defence capabilities and advance on its path towards NATO membership.
