Under the aegis of NATO’s Civil Emergency Planning activities, a training course for first responders to chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) incidents was held at the Republican Study-Methodological Centre of Civil Protection, Committee for Emergency Situations of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan, in Almaty, Kazakhstan from 30 May to 3 June 2016. The course took place for the third year in a row and welcomed 15 students from seven NATO partner countries.

“Blending theory with practice, the main aim of the course is to ensure that first responders have a common knowledge base and a minimum level of preparedness when responding to CBRN incidents. To this end, the training course was designed to assist nations in improving their civil emergency plans, including cooperation between first responders, while complementing current national training activities,” said the NATO Liaison Officer for Central Asia, Rosaria Puglisi, at the inauguration ceremony. The opening was also attended by General Zhasultan Jumashev and the Chair of the NATO Civil Protection Group, Ragnar Boe.

During two exercise scenarios students learned how to conduct a search operation, as well as how to deal with an accident involving a motor vehicle, a toxic industrial chemical storage tank and injured people.
