Students at Uzbekistan’s Academy of the Armed Forces now have access to the latest literature on regional and international security, thanks to the opening of a NATO Multimedia Corner – the first to be established in a military higher educational institution of a partner country.
This initiative is the fruit of cooperation between the Ministry of Defence and the office of the NATO Liaison Officer in Central Asia.
“By providing the Academy’s students and teaching staff with access to the most up-to-date, world-class scholarly research in the realm of international security studies, NATO seeks to enhance its contribution to the further modernisation and reform of defence education in Uzbekistan,” says Alexander Vinnikov, the NATO Liaison Officer.
He was joined at the opening ceremony on 24 August 2015 by the acting Chief of the Academy of the Armed Forces, Col Ilimdar Ilyasov, senior officers and students of the Academy, as well as Col Marino Francavilla, the Defence Attaché at the Italian Embassy, which serves as NATO’s Contact Point Embassy in the country.
The NATO Multimedia Corner will provide access to the latest independent scholarly literature on regional and international security, international relations and military science. Books (in both hard copy and electronic formats), articles and electronic journal subscriptions will be available for students and teaching staff in the English and Russian languages. Official NATO publications and the NATO library’s “LibGuides” research tool will also be accessible.
Previously (in May 2013), the first NATO Depository Library in Uzbekistan was opened at the University of World Economy and Diplomacy by the NATO Secretary General’s Special Representative for the Caucasus and Central Asia, Mr James Appathurai.
