The NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg joined the President of France François Hollande and other world leaders for a unity rally in central Paris on Sunday (11 January 2015) to pay tribute to the victims of last week's terrorist attacks in Paris and in solidarity with the people of France.

Arriving in Paris, the Secretary General said, "I am proud to join the unity rally in solidarity with the people of France and for a common front against terror. The attacks in Paris led to the death of many innocent people. They targeted believers and unbelievers, Christians, Muslims and Jews. They were also attacks on the free press, free opinion, and our open societies. These are core values for NATO and for all of us, and open societies are our best defence against terror."

Mr Stoltenberg praised France for being at the forefront of the fight against terrorism from Mali and the Sahel to Iraq. He said, "we stand with our Ally France, we stand in full solidarity with the people of France, and we stand united for our values."

NATO and Allied flags are flying at half-mast at NATO Headquarters.
