NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg was briefed on operations and activities by the Alliance’s top military commander, General Philip Breedlove, during his first visit to NATO’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) in Mons, Belgium on Friday (24 October 2014). "It is vital that we can stay informed in real time about emerging crises across the world so that our military can provide us with the right advice, and we can take the right decisions,” Mr. Stoltenberg said.

The Secretary General visited the operation’s centre at the command headquarters, where all relevant threats and NATO activities are monitored on a 24/7 basis. "This operations centre is at the heart of NATO’s command and control network and this is why I wanted to be here and see it for myself in the first weeks of my mandate,” said Mr. Stoltenberg.

He thanked military personnel for their service and dedication.  “I am very happy to meet the highly skilled men and women who work here. They come from many nations, but work as one and they do a great job.  We took important decisions at the Wales Summit, and with their help, we are now turning them into reality.  To keep our nations safe and secure”, he said. The Secretary General also visited the NATO Computer Incident Response Capability (NCIRC), which is the technical centre responsible for the cyber defence of NATO networks and the NATO Special Operations Headquarters (NSHQ) which coordinates all NATO special operations activities.
