At the end of this month, I will conclude my tenure as NATO's Secretary General. For the last five years, it has been an honour for me to work alongside the dedicated and capable military and civilian leaders from NATO's twenty-eight member nations. It has also been a true privilege for me to serve our great Alliance with you, the men and women of our Armed Forces.

Over these five years, I have seen your commitment, professionalism, and skill. You have kept the peace in Kosovo, saved lives in Libya, and set Afghanistan on a path toward self-sustained security. You have demonstrated the strength of our Alliance, not only through unmatched military capability, but through your devotion to your duties and your compassion for people struggling to find peace amid terrorism, piracy, and authoritarianism.

Some of you have suffered injuries, visible and not, and lost friends in the course of your service. There are no words to heal such wounds. But we must continue to respect these sacrifices through continued vigilance and unrelenting commitment to the security of our nations and the fulfilment of the work that lies ahead. That has been your pledge. You, and those before you, have carried it out faithfully. For this and for all you do, I sincerely thank you and all those who have served under NATO's flag.

NATO will remain the strongest military Alliance the world has ever known because we share a common belief in freedom and democracy and we stand together to preserve these values. I am confident that your indispensible contributions to this cause will ensure NATO's ability to overcome today's challenges and those ahead.

Respectfully, Anders Fogh Rasmussen
