NATO leaders will take important steps at their two-day Summit in Wales to counter a dramatically changed security environment, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said on Thursday (4 September 2014). The Secretary General said the meeting “will be one of the most important” in NATO’s history adding it was “a crucial Summit at a crucial time.”

He said NATO leaders at their talks will take important steps to counter threats which the Alliance is faced with both in the east, with Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, and to the southeast in the Middle East. Allies will also focus on newer threats such as cyber, missile defence and hybrid warfare.

Thursday’s talks will focus on Afghanistan and on Ukraine. The Summit will open a new chapter in NATO's engagement with Afghanistan as the ISAF combat mission is completed at the end of 2014. On Ukraine, leaders will meet with Ukraine President Poroshenko, and look to enhance NATO-Ukraine cooperation.
