Chairman of NATO’s International Board of Auditors (IBAN) Dr Charilaos Charisis and President of the Polish Supreme Audit Institution (NIK) Mr Krzysztof Kwiatkowski signed a memorandum for the External Evaluation of IBAN in Warsaw on 28 August 2014. Polish Deputy Minister of Defence Mr Czeslaw Mroczek was also present.
The External Evaluation, or peer review, is a voluntary procedure that is foreseen within the international auditing standard of the International Organisation of Supreme Audit Institutions (INTOSAI). Only 30 of around 190 Supreme Audit Institutions worldwide have undergone a peer review.
IBAN always aims to meet the highest standards and fulfil the principles of transparency and accountability so as to provide NATO member governments with the best possible information on NATO common funding spending. For these reasons, IBAN will undergo the first peer review in its history.
The Polish NIK is leading the peer review with the participation of the Spanish Court of Audit and a memorandum is due to be signed on 15 September 2014 in Madrid. The peer review report will be submitted to the North Atlantic Council at the end of 2014.
