NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said that Allies had to remain vigilant and ensure they are able to defend freedom, democracy and the rule of law in Europe during his acceptance speech of this year’s Czech and Slovak Transatlantic Award in Bratislava. “With its aggression against Ukraine these past few months, Russia has called into question the very values and norms upon which we have built modern Europe,” the Secretary General said on Wednesday (14 May 2014).

He stressed that “no one should doubt” NATO’s resolve, adding that the Alliance should stand up “for a Europe that is truly whole, free and at peace,” firmly grounded in the European Union and firmly connected with North American Allies through NATO. Mr. Fogh Rasmussen received the award at this year’s Bratislava Global Security Forum for the support he gave to central and eastern European countries NATO membership aspirations as Danish Prime Minister, for his contribution to the strong transatlantic bond and for his actions as Secretary General in wake of the Ukraine crisis.

The Secretary General will deliver a keynote speech to the conference on Thursday. He is also holding talks with Slovak President Ivan Gasparovic, Prime Minister Robert Fico, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs Miroslav Lajcak before attending a working lunch with the four Prime Ministers of the Visegrad Group of nations. The group includes Slovakia, Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic.
