NATO Deputy Secretary General Ambassador Alexander Vershbow said that the Alliance is interested in strengthening its partnership with the Republic of Moldova at the start of a three-day visit to the country which started on Monday (12 May 2014).

In his meetings with top government officials Ambassador Vershbow said both NATO and Moldova could do more to expand their partnership, through enhanced political dialogue and practical cooperation. The Deputy Secretary General met with President Nicolae Timofti, Prime Minister Iurie Leancă, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Natalia Gherman and the Chairman of the Moldovan Parliament, Igor Corman. A revised Individual Partnership Action Plan (IPAP) is currently being developed for the 2014-2015 period. Key areas of cooperation include support to wide-ranging reforms, assistance to the preparation of strategic documents, defence planning and budgeting and enhancing military education and training in Moldova.

Ambassador Vershbow also reiterated NATO’s respect for Moldova’s neutrality and underscored that Allies continue to support the country’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity. The Deputy Secretary General will on Tuesday discuss the prospects of future NATO-Moldova cooperation with students at the State University of Moldova and at Comrat University. On Wednesday, he will address the Conference “NATO Partnerships: Achievements and Prospects”, organized by the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Documentation Center on NATO in Moldova, in the context of the 20th anniversary of the Partnership for Peace.
