On 25 April 2014, the NATO Political Affairs and Security Policy Division organised a visit to NATO Headquarters for a delegation from the National Defense University of the United Arab Emirates, who were visiting Brussels as part of NATO’s public diplomacy activities under the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative (ICI).

Topics discussed included NATO’s Current Political Agenda, NATO’s Transformation and Outreach to the Middle East and the Gulf region, NATO-UAE relations and Military Cooperation in the Framework of the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative.

The group met with Mr James Appathurai, Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs and Security Policy, with Mr. Nicola de Santis, Head Middle East and North Africa Section, Political Affairs and Security Policy Division, and with Colonel Emmanuel Biondini, Head of MD & ICI Section, Cooperation & Regional Security Division, International Military Staff (IMS).

The group also had the opportunity to meet the Head of the UAE Mission to NATO, H.E. Ambassador Mohammed Ali Al-Naqbi and the Military Representative of the UAE Mission to NATO, LTC Dr Mohammed Al-Shehhi, as well as the staff from the UAE Mission to NATO.
