Ambassador Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic, NATO Assistant Secretary General for Public Diplomacy, paid a visit to Georgia on 6 and 7 April to inaugurate the NATO Week. She delivered a keynote speech at the conference “Road to NATO: Sharing Integration and membership experience” and also engaged in public diplomacy activities with youth and key opinion formers.

Ambassador Grabar stressed the importance of Georgia as a country aspiring to join the Alliance and the biggest non-NATO contributor in Afghanistan. She reiterated that the decision taken by Allied leaders at the 2008 Bucharest Summit stands, namely that Georgia will become a member of NATO provided it meets the necessary requirements.

During her visit to the capital Tbilisi, Ambassador Grabar met Georgian Foreign Minister Maya Panjikidze, Minister of Defence Irakli Alasania, and State Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Alex Petriashvili.

Georgia’s hopes for further Euro-Atlantic integration are an important driver for reform. “The prospect of membership in the European and Euro-Atlantic institutions strengthens our motivation to adopt and implement challenging reforms in defence and security, social and economic, and other spheres,” said Foreign Minister Panjikidze. “We believe the time has come to advance Georgia’s NATO integration process,” she added.

NATO Week will run in all main cities of Georgia to reach out to broader audiences. It is an annual flagship event organised by the Information Center on NATO and the European Union, in cooperation with NATO’s Public Diplomacy Division, the NATO Liaison Office in Georgia and the Romanian embassy, which currently serves as NATO’s Contact Point Embassy in Georgia.
