On 18 and 19 March 2014, the NATO Political Affairs and Security Policy Division organised a visit to NATO Headquarters for a group from the Sultan Qaboos University, who were visiting Brussels as part of NATO’s public diplomacy activities under the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative (ICI).

Topics discussed included NATO’s new Strategic Concept and Partnership with Gulf states; Military Cooperation in the Framework of the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative; NATO-Russia relations; NATO’s Outreach to the Middle East and the Gulf Region; new emerging security challenges; NATO’s Anti-Piracy Operation; NATO’s Operation in Afghanistan; and NATO’s Science for Peace and Security Programme.

The group met with Dr. Deniz Beten-Yüksel, Head of the Science for Peace and Security Programme Section, Emerging Security Challenges Division, with Mr. Rob Ayasse, Operations Section B, Operations Division, Mr. Mihai Carp, Deputy Head, Operations Section A, Operations Division, with Dr. Detlef Puhl, Senior Advisor to the Assistant Secretary General for Emerging Security Challenges, with Ms Gwendoline Vamos, Political Officer, Russia and Ukraine Countries Section, Political Affairs and Security Policy Division, with Lt. Colonel Henri Lambaré, Mediterranean Dialogue and Istanbul Cooperation Initiative Section, Cooperation & Regional Security Division, International Military Staff, and with Dr. Rolf Schwarz, Political Officer, Middle East and North Africa Section, Political Affairs and Security Policy Division.
