NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen together with the Ambassadors from the North Atlantic Council and the Supreme Allied Commander Europe General Breedlove discussed priorities for this year’s NATO Summit in Wales and international issues of common interest with members of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly on Monday (17 February). The talks were part of regular consultations between the two organisations.

The Secretary General said the Summit would shape “Future NATO” by taking clear decisions on improving military capabilities, maintaining interoperability and deepening NATO cooperation with partners around the globe. Progress on the completion of the NATO-led mission in Afghanistan, including planning for a new mission to train, advise and assist the Afghan security forces from 2015 onwards was also discussed.  Mr Fogh Rasmussen stressed that he counted on the ideas, contributions and support of the members of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly in the run-up to the Summit. The North Atlantic Council and the NATO Parliamentary Assembly also had a wide-ranging debate on various international security issues.

The Secretary General also had a separate meeting with the President of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, Mr. Hugh Bayley. The NATO Parliamentary Assembly is an inter-parliamentary organization of parliamentarians from NATO member countries and 14 associate members. The Assembly is independent of NATO but provides a link between NATO and the parliaments of its member countries to help build parliamentary and public awareness and understanding for Alliance policies.
